A fishing rod also called with fishing pole is one important part for fly fishing. Choosing the best rod ( pole ) for fly fishing is very important for our fishing experience. In the market there are several types of fishing rods, but especially for fly fishing the rod must be longer, thinner and more flexible. One characteristic of a fly rod should be lightweight, its for cast even the lightest fly. When you choose a fly fishing rod, you will have to use an industry standard system that specifies weight.

Last time ago fly fishing rod made from bamboo split material, but today most of the rods are made from composite like carbon and graphite, carbon and boron or fiberglass materials. Fly fishing rods are not weighed in grams but with number system. A basic guide that will assist you in choosing the proper fly rod is: Lower weight, small fish; higher weight, larger fish. Light fly rods do not cast well if the wind is strong.

The follow are a little guide for species and weight for fly fishing rods :

  • Weight 1-3, its use for pan fish, small trout and other small fish species.
  • Weight 4-6, its use for small fish species of all kinds, small bass and trout in medium sized.
  • Weight 7-8, its use for bass, trout in large sized, salmon and steelhead.
  • Weight 9-14, its use for large saltwater fish species, large salmon, muskie and tarpon.

For Length, Common lengths for fly fishing rods are 7, 8 and 9 feet. If fishing in an open area where longer casts are possible, choose a longer fly fishing rod.
